- Theoretically, I love the Moneyball concept but does it or can it work within the confines of our global game?
- How then, does Football differ from North American sports?
- I’ll tell you how. First off, you are dealing with, ostensibly, one currency, the U.S. dollar, save for some Canadian presence in MLS &, obviously, Canadian teams in the NHL
- Does a side win the SuperBowl or Stanley Cup years in a row, exemplifying sporting dynasties? … yes, but very rarely
- Couple this expectancy that there’ll almost be a new winner every year with what is demanded of a professional sports outfit & you render a tolerence for just making up the numbers that global football fans culturally cannot relate to
- Very importantly, by dealing primarily in one currency … imagine a salary cap in Football as a world sport with countless currencies, cultures, economies & perceived values!?
- There can be no level playing field in Football due to it’s globally economic variances & such a massive gulf in league & national prosperities
- Football is very much a ‘success now’ (& at all costs) sport whereby you pay for proven & world class talent & where we sadly, at the highest level, have little or no legitimate time or opportunity to nurture young talent
- Can you field a side or have a squad assembled as a result of disadvantaged revenue? Sadly, & regrettably, I believe not

salvation & genius ….. or a bunch of arse!?

There is a very limited market for professional American football and baseball players which leaves players with few options for employment where in football there are many top leagues vying for players.
North American sports are franchises granted by a professional league not independent clubs who are members of a league. North American leagues have restrictions on drafting players and many limitations on free agency. Relegation is unheard of as well so there is little pressure on teams if they are performing poorly; they will not be relegated from the NFL.
I think Moneyball works well in these closed environments but their is definitely room for sabermetrics in football in terms of evaluating players and their worth.
